Prevention Awareness Support Services in Union County has started three new support groups aimed at helping families navigate through some tough parenting situations virtually.
Parents Coping with COVID is a peer led support group facilitated by local parents who work in the mental health field. This group meets weekly and is for parents and caregivers to talk with and meet other parents / caregivers who may be experiencing feeling alone, depressed, anxious, and overwhelmed. The group talks about the importance of self-care, depression, anxiety, protective factors, helping our children cope with COVID, scheduling, coping with stress, and focusing on the positives. Expert speakers will occasionally be invited to share information and answer questions.
Coping with Co-Parenting is a peer led support group facilitated by local parents who are also parent educators. This group meets bi-weekly and is for parents / caregivers to talk with and meet other co-parenting parents / caregivers. Parents may be working a case plan with Children Protective Services, experiencing divorce or other custody cases, or just co-parenting with another parent / caregiver. This group talks about self-care, helping children cope with change, do's and don't s of co-parenting, solving conflicts, managing anger, and how to stay connected with their children. The group also covers some skill building activities.
Parenting Children with Emotional / Mental / Behavioral Health Diagnoses is a peer led support group facilitated by local parents. This group meets twice a month and is for parents / caregivers to meet other parents / caregivers who also are caring for children that have emotional and behavioral challenges. The group will have some guest speakers to share information and answer questions. The group discusses the importance of self-care, depression, anxiety, addiction, daily challenges, coping with stress, mental health / illness, and coping with mental illness.
